And of course there was Bo. He followed us around, tail wagging, as Richard led me from machine to machine, giving me tips on how to use my muscles and talking me through the reps. Bo seemed very interested and relaxed, watching me with his caramel eyes. But I also could see that he was protective of his territory and of Richard. Whenever someone walked in whose scent he did not know, he could cause quite a racket. That pretty dog could also look mighty intimidating. But on this, my first day in the gym, Bo was very sociable toward me, the stranger.
The final machine at the end of my workout was a stationary bike. Because of some painting and rearranging going on in the gym, the bike was in a room all by itself. The first time I used the stationary bike, I was so weak and uncoordinated from my recent inactivity that Richard had to pick up my feet and place them on the pedals. The first few times he talked me through ten tough minutes of pedaling. After that, he left me alone to work at my own pace on the bike.
But Bo never left me alone in the room. Bo curled right around the base of the bike while I huffed and puffed and sweated. When I was done, he would follow me out of the room. Before long, when I arrived at the gym, Bo would trot outside to meet me right at my car door, his furry mouth smiling, his caramel eyes calm and intelligent. I wasnât the only person he did this with, but I felt special anyway. I would talk to him while I got my gear together and locked my car.
Then Bo would follow me indoors, his tail wagging. Sometimes I gave him a treat, and he would dance on his hind legs for it. Sometimes as I worked out, I would pull off my outer sweatshirt and toss it on the floor, and Bo curled up on that.
One time I wasnât paying attention, and I left my purse on the floor in the open while I worked out in the next room. The gym was busy that morning, and after around twenty minutes, I suddenly realized that I had several hundred dollars in my purse. I hurried to get it.
Bo was curled around my purse, sleeping.
Some years have passed, and I still work out at the gym on a regular basis. Richard still trains me, and weâve become very good friends. Bo still meets me at my car. After Bo dances for his treats, he curls up on my jacket while I work out.
Today I am lighter, stronger, and still on my way to better health. I credit Richard for helping me get there. In fact, I believe Richard probably helped save my life . . . with the assistance of Bo, the dancing dog.
